Dogs have 100-300 million (up to 1 billion in some breeds)

olfactory receptors vs. about 6 million in humans.

Their brain area for smell processing is proportionately about

40 times larger than in humans.

They are 10,000 to 100,000 times (more for scent specialized

breeds like bloodhounds) more sensitive to smells than humans.

So the information dogs gather on walks is like you reading your phone - and we know how much time you spend doing that! Additionally, 10 minutes of sniffing can be as tiring as 30 minutes of walking.

Another benefit of regular exercise is weight management and joint mobility. Around 50-60% of dogs are overweight. Even one added pound can make a huge, pardon the pun, difference! Being overweight is linked to decreased lifespan, arthritis, diabetes and other issues. Walking helps keep dogs at their proper weight and it's good for maintaining joint mobility which is important for all of us as we age.

You may think your dog, especially the little ones, gets enough exercise running around the backyard, but that's not the same as a structured walk which offers much more enrichment and stimulation.
